Selection of Vector Boson Fusion Events in the $H→γγ$ Decay Channel Using an Inclusive Event Shape
[CERN-THESIS-2015-037]
Hamburg 1-126 (2015)2015 = Universität Hamburg, Masterarbeit, 2015
Present-day measurements of the signal strength of the Higgs-boson production modevector boson fusion tend to suffer from large theoretical uncertainties on the gluon fusioncontamination in the vector boson fusion selection. The measurements are still limited by thestatistical uncertainties, but as more data will be recorded, the statistical uncertainties will bereduced. [...]

Towards an Ytterbium based optical waveform synthesizer
Molecular and atomic structures and dynamics have been unraveled with the development of ultrafast, high-energy optical lasers, delivering pulses from the infra-red to the X-rays. Soft X-Rays attosecond pulses can be generated via high-harmonic generation from an optical high-energy, single-cycle laser. [...]

Ni/Ti Reactive Multilayers for Joining
218 pp. (2015)2015 = University of Coimbra, Diss., 2015
Reactive multilayers are interesting for a variety of applications, including near-net shape form- ing of parts/systems of intermetallic compounds, dissimilar/similar joining, ignition origin and as highly localised heat sources. In the last decade, the production of intermetallic compounds, from multilayer thin films, became a widespread process. [...]

Generation and control of super-octave-spanning spectra
Continued progress in photon science demands advances in light source technology. For this purpose, this dissertation presents the generation and control of super-octave-spanning optical pulses based on dielectric chirped mirrors. The generation of isolated attosecond XUV pulses and exploration of attosecond physics would strongly benefit from the availability of intense phase-stable optical waveforms custom-sculpted on the time scale of the light period. Interference effects in new physics processes at the LHC
[DESY-THESIS-2015-037]
Hamburg : Verlag Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, DESY-THESIS 188 pp. (2015) [10.3204/DESY-THESIS-2015-037]2015 = Dissertation, Universität Hamburg, 2015
Interference effects between nearly mass-degenerate particles are ad-dressed in this thesis, comprising higher-order calculations, a model-independent method to calculate interference terms efficiently and aphenomenological application to current Higgs searches at the LHC.Predictions of cross sections and decay widths can be severelyaffected by interference terms between quasi-degenerate states arising inmodels beyond the Standard Model. We formulate a generalisation ofthe narrow-width approximation (NWA) which allows for a consistenttreatment of such effects by factorising the interference term into on-shellmatrix elements of the production and decay parts, optionally furtherapproximated as simple interference weight factors, incorporating one-loop and real corrections in a UV- and IR-finite way. Dissecting CFT Correlators and String Amplitudes: Conformal Blocks and On-Shell Recursion for General Tensor Fields
[DESY-THESIS-2015-026]
This thesis covers two main topics: the tensorial structure of quantum field theory correlators in general spacetime dimensions and a method for computing string theory scattering amplitudes directly in target space. In the first part tensor structures in generic bosonic CFT correlators and scattering amplitudes are studied. To this end arbitrary irreducible tensor representations of $SO(d)$ (traceless mixed-symmetry tensors) are encoded in group invariant polynomials, by contracting with sets of commuting and anticommuting polarization vectors which implement the index symmetries of the tensors. γ-TiAl material is an attractive alternative candidate for aerospace and automotiveapplications because of its low density, high specific yield strength and high creep andoxidation resistance. It has been used successfully in the manufacture of low-pressureturbine blades in the GEnxTM engine, which represents a major advance in propulsionefficiency, with a 20% reduction in fuel consumption, a 50% reduction in noise, and an 80%reduction in NOx emissions compared with prior engines of the same class. During the first run of the LHC, no apparent signs of new physics beyond the StandardModel were discovered, but rather the Standard Model-like properties of the Higgs particleconfirmed. Therefore, new and powerful methods are needed to disclose the traces of newphysics, which is expected to be at the TeV scale in order to solve the hierarchy problem. In this thesis, we propose two complementary strategies for the quest for new physics atthe LHC. Very-high-energy (VHE)γ-ray astronomy deals with the ground-based detection of pho-tons with energies of a few tens of GeV to∼100 TeV by employing the Imaging Air Cherenkov Technique (IACT).
