Open Access Publication Funding

The "Open Access Publication Funding" programme of the German Research Foundation highlights the pivotal role of Open Access in improving scientific communication. It aims to create structural adjustment in financial flows, thus enabling the transformation towards Open Access while improving transparency regarding the costs for publication of research results. To this end it grants a fixed allowance for the publication of research results in Open Access.

In this context the German Research Foundation grants DESY researchers a fixed allowance for publications appearing in original open access journals (“Gold Open Access”) as well as for articles in hybrid journals that are part of transformative contracts.

This subsidy is the result of many years of efforts by the DESY library team to implement a detailed and well organised infrastructure for capturing publication fees and processes, developed within the JOIN² collaboration and used by several partners. Already since 2015, methods have been established in this context to support the scientists, fostering the open access transformation of the publishing system. The significance of the now digital approval workflow as an important part of this structure also becomes evident here.

For researchers this program does not require and additonal application. The regular handling of publication costs via the DESY Library will ensure the allowance is granted.
